What "Hypoallergenic" Actually Means
No dog is 100% hypoallergenic. All dogs produce the protein Can f 1, found in dander, saliva, and urine — the actual allergen most people react to. However, some breeds shed significantly less, meaning they deposit less allergen-laden hair throughout your home. For mild to moderate allergy sufferers, these breeds can make the difference between sneezing constantly and living comfortably with a dog.
The top three low-allergen small breeds are the Poodle, Bichon Frise, and Maltese. Here's how they compare. You can also run head-to-head comparisons on BreedDuel.
Quick Stats
- Miniature Poodle: 10–15 lb, 10–15 in, lifespan 10–18 years
- Bichon Frise: 12–18 lb, 9.5–11.5 in, lifespan 14–15 years
- Maltese: under 7 lb, 7–9 in, lifespan 12–15 years
Poodle: The Smartest of the Three
Poodles (Toy, Miniature, or Standard) are routinely ranked as the second most intelligent dog breed. They are exceptionally trainable, pick up commands in just a few repetitions, and have an almost human-like ability to read emotions. Their tight, curly coat sheds minimally and traps dander close to the body — you'll need to vacuum less.
Grooming: The downside. Poodle coats grow continuously and must be clipped every 6–8 weeks. Professional grooming costs $60–$100 per session. Without regular grooming, the coat mats badly. Many owners learn to clip at home.
Temperament: Confident, playful, athletic. Poodles love to learn and need mental stimulation. They can be sensitive to harsh handling. Excellent with children and other dogs.
Health: Generally healthy, but watch for Addison's disease, hip dysplasia, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) in some lines. Poodles are among the longest-lived breeds — 15+ years is common.
Bichon Frise: The Cheerful Apartment Dog
The Bichon Frise is a powder-puff of joy. Small, white, fluffy, and built for one purpose: being adored. Their hair grows in tight curls similar to the Poodle and sheds minimally. Dander stays in the coat rather than dispersing through the air.
Grooming: Similar to the Poodle — professional grooming every 4–6 weeks. The classic "puffball" show cut requires more maintenance; many owners prefer a shorter utility cut.
Temperament: Cheerful, social, and gentle. Bichons are less driven than Poodles and more purely companion-oriented. They do well with strangers and children. Can develop separation anxiety if left alone too much.
Health: Generally robust. Watch for bladder stones (Bichons have an elevated rate), allergies (ironically, many Bichons themselves suffer from allergies), and patellar luxation.
Maltese: The Tiny Lap Dog
The Maltese is one of the oldest known breeds — depictions appear in Greek and Roman art. Under 7 pounds and draped in a long silky coat, they produce minimal dander. The coat is hair-like rather than fur, similar to human hair growth patterns.
Grooming: If kept in a long coat, daily brushing is required to prevent tangles. Most pet owners opt for a short "puppy cut" which reduces maintenance dramatically.
Temperament: Devoted, sweet, and a little feisty. Maltese bond intensely with one person. They can be stubborn and are prone to "small dog syndrome" if not trained consistently. Not always the best with young children due to their fragile size — a child falling on a Maltese can cause serious injury.
Health: Watch for patellar luxation, dental disease (tiny mouths pack in too many teeth), and collapsed trachea. Maltese are sensitive to cold and shouldn't be outside in winter without a coat.
Allergy Testing Tip
Before committing to a breed, spend time with a specific dog — not just the breed in general. Allergen levels vary between individual dogs. Ask a breeder if you can visit and spend 30–60 minutes with puppies before putting down a deposit.
